What is a fortune worth compared to a reputation built over a lifetime? This story reported about Imam Al-Bukhârî shows how far a man can go to preserve the trust placed in him.
A very long time ago, well before airplanes, trains, and cars, traveling to learn could take weeks… sometimes months.
And among those who traveled extensively to seek knowledge was a man who became one of the greatest scholars in the history of Islam:
Imam Muhammad ibn Ismâ‘îl al-Bukhârî.
From his youth, he devoted his life to the words of the Prophet ﷺ.
He traveled through cities.
He met scholars.
He listened to narrators.
He verified their accounts with extraordinary precision.
For al-Bukhârî, reporting a word from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was not a small thing.
One had to be certain.
Certain of the words.
Certain of the one who had transmitted them.
Certain of his honesty.
Certain of his memory.
And al-Bukhârî knew that one thing was indispensable to accomplish this mission:
trust.
An ancient biography of Imam al-Bukhârî reports that one day, during one of his journeys, he boarded a ship.
The journey was to be long.
Around him, travelers had set up their belongings. Some were chatting. Others were watching the water. The ship moved slowly while the land gradually disappeared behind them.
Al-Bukhârî was carrying something very precious with him.
A pouch containing…
a thousand dinars.
A thousand gold coins.
It was a fortune.
A sum with which one could buy an enormous amount of things at that time.
During the journey, a man approached al-Bukhârî.
They talked.
Day after day, the man was pleasant with him.
He would come and sit near him.
He would talk with him.
He seemed to want to become his friend.
And little by little, al-Bukhârî granted him his trust.
During a conversation, he told him about the pouch he was carrying.
A thousand dinars.
The man now knew that al-Bukhârî possessed an immense sum of money.
The journey continued.
Then, one day, everything changed.
In the middle of the ship, a cry rang out.
— I’ve been robbed!
The travelers turned around.
It was the man who had approached al-Bukhârî.
He seemed upset.
— I’ve been robbed of a pouch!
The passengers came closer.
Someone asked him:
— What was in it?
The man replied:
— A thousand dinars.
Exactly the sum that al-Bukhârî was carrying.
The ship was in the open sea.
No one could get off.
The thief therefore had to be among the travelers.
Very quickly, a decision was made:
everyone would be searched.
One traveler after another.
One bag after another.
One pouch after another.
Al-Bukhârî immediately understood what was happening.
He had on him…
a pouch containing exactly a thousand dinars.
Imagine for a moment what would have happened when it was found.
The man would have shouted:
— That’s my money!
Al-Bukhârî could have replied:
— No! This pouch belongs to me!
But how could the travelers have known who was telling the truth?
Some might have believed al-Bukhârî.
